Bottom Line
Snow Leopard is making huge strides to attract the SMB market with many easy to work with services, as long as you can find them.
With the release of Snow Leopard Server, Apple is on track to gain ground in a market Microsoft dominates with its
Price for Snow Leopard is $499 for an unlimited number of client licenses; with the hardware loaner we tested came to a total of $2,998 total. The good news is that Snow Leopard Server can run on different hardware. The minimum requirements are more flexible than its predecessors and you can find them here.
Apple asked me to make some tweaks to improve performance and to verify the server's configuration. The changes, however, were challenges beyond the scope of this review (such as setting up a separate DNS server; see below).

Installation and Setup
For those comfortable with Linux, Snow Leopard Server might be easy to maneuver at the command line, but the GUI is what always matters with a Macintosh. Services and their parameters in this server OS are simplified (maybe over-simplified) in the Server Preferences.
Server Preferences aptly shows the Web services that are running with a green jellybean next to each service. Once you know what's on or off, you simply turn on the service that you want. At first, I wasn't sure how to use the Web Server, for instance, as almost all of its parameters were hidden. What you get on the surface is sufficient for simple deployments. For more advanced management, you need to go to Server Admin. The Web Server is also capable of running server side scripts such as PHP and Ruby. To take full advantage of the server tools, you'll want to learn about all the automation technologies in OS X, including its command line tools. The core of OSX automation is AppleScript, with which you can expand the capabilities of the Web Server by creating Web Services.
The Mac Pro hardware I tested the OS on came with one Intel Quad Core 2.66 GHz chipset with 3 GB of RAM. A typical deployment of Snow Leopard Server requires a little more horsepower, so companies with 50 or less employees will likely buy a Xserve server and upgrade the hardware as they see fit. Apple says it can run on much weaker hardware, but we don't recommend it.
Installing Snow Leopard Server was just as easy as installing SuSe Linux or
Now entirely 64-bit, Apple says Snow Leopard OS performs faster than its predecessors. However, the server version performed inconsistently when I tested it over Virtual Network Computing (VNC) remote control. I used the open source TightVNC client. Occasionally, Snow Leopard slowed to a crawl, forcing a reboot. Turning on the firewall and opening the appropriate ports for VNC prevented even starting a VNC session. After a couple of tries, the firewall worked, but VNC proved to be an inadequate tool for accessing the server outside the network. If you are running MAC OS X client, you can use the remote administration to access applications. I only used VNC so that I could reach the server from any client over the Web.
Administration and Services
Considering that Snow Leopard Server has a Unix kernel under its fur, Apple has done a tremendous job simplifying administration but the way the services are arranged throughout Snow Leopard Server needs better organization. For instance, some of the features and tools in the Dock are also in the folder within the Dock and also buried in System Preferences. As a Windows guy, it took me some time to get used to going between the Doc, the Server pane and System Preferences to customize Snow Leopard Server. IT familiar with Apple Server software are probably used to the back and forth.
As stated above, Apple created an over-simplified view of some of the services in Snow Leopard Server. Some services are not yet part of Server Preferences, and that disorganization forces you to jump around within the UI. Yet still, the overall effect of working with services in the Server Preferences was better than in the Microsoft SBS 2008 interface layout. The SBS interface reduces the functionality of the underlying operating system while it restricts the number of services you can use, which aren't restricted by Snow Leopard. Server Preferences tends to do a more by opening services that would otherwise require highly skilled administrative support. Just switch a button and you're done creating a VPN or a Web server (well, almost—the services still require that you fill in a few parameters).
Server Preferences have the same appearance as System Preferences in the Mac OS. The Web server, for instance, has a few check boxes for activation and a place to link to a folder with Web content. Email and virtual private network (VPN) are just as easy to start and configure. The design has SMB written all over it because there's virtually no administration that has to be done. If only the Server folder in the Dock followed the same design, to make the experience more consistent.
Snow Leopard's Server Admin is more technical and condenses all the features of the server so that administrators can have one place to go. It's similar to the Windows Server 2008 Server Manager. Server Admin, however, is very slow to start. It locked on me a few times, regardless of how I connected to the server. According to Apple, Server Admin uses forward and reverse DNS lookups to find the servers on the network. The Server Admin was able to resolve the local hostname of the server but it took a long, long time to do it. For the best performance, you need to deploy a DNS server on a different box so that Server Admin is capable of authenticating and connecting faster. Apple says that Server Admin was timing out trying to resolve the hostname with the IP address, even though the services were running locally. Although the Server Admin technology is powerful, small businesses with few or no IT resources will have a hard time deploying it because of the DNS server requirement.
Despite some of the slow progress, I managed to use Snow Leopard Server and enjoyed seeing the main features of some of the server services accessible in the graphical UI. I thought I would have to go to the command line to explore them. The Mail service took only minutes to configure and test. I used our spam server to redirect messages internally on our network. I tried using Open Directory but could not activate it at first. I could not create an authentication server, and I don't know why it failed to start on several tries. Of course, Kerberos, the underlying authentication technology, used for authentication relies on DNS lookups. Finally, I started User and Groups in the Server Preferences and that activated the Open Directory. There are multiple ways you can deploy Open Directory, so I suggest you read the help files. It boils down to this: Server Admin provides far more details than Server Preferences, so it's the destination of choice if you are a network administrator.
In addition to new versions of Wiki Server, Podcast Producer and ICal, Apple threw in a Mobile Access Server to allow iPhone and other Mac clients to stay connected to the office. This is Apple's answer to VPN, just as Microsoft has the DirectAccess protocol. However, Mobile Access is not as complete as VPN. With Mobile Access, you gain HTTP and a couple of messaging protocols—but that's all. Mobile Access uses its own version of a highly secured tunnel; it is intended strictly for mobile workers who need access to corporate emails. That said, Snow Leopard Server also supports VPN, of course.
Bottom Line
Server Preferences of Snow Leopard Server is strong evidence that Apple is working hard at attracting small businesses that would otherwise consider staying in the Windows ecosystem. When pitted against Microsoft SBS or even Server Essentials, Snow Leopard can hold its own. For $499, you get an unlimited client access, full-fledged server applications like Mail, and a friendlier interface. Against Windows Server 2008 R2, that's another matter, for Windows contains advanced services and roles, and has sophisticated deployment capabilities.
So, is Snow Leopard Server as good as SBS? That depends on what your infrastructure needs and the applications that you need to run on your backbone. It's no brainer that companies that use Mac services will want Snow Leopard Server.
